It’s the second week of February and if you’re like most Americans any New Year’s resolutions that you made have a long gone by the wayside. But it’s not too late to get back on track. Just a few simple adjustments to your plan can have you well on your way to successfully achieving your goals for 2014.

The reason New Year’s resolutions typically fail is they tend to be unrealistic.  In many cases people set goals that do not align with their inner beliefs.  For example,  people decide that they want to lose weight however mentally they don’t believe that they’re capable of losing 20 or 30 pounds or they believe that earning more money will make them happy and when it does not they backslide into old habits.

So now you know a little bit about why New Year’s resolution’s tend to fail, here are a few tips to help you recommit to achieving your goals for 2014.

First, focus on just one goal. Whether it’s losing weight, getting a new job, getting out of debt, or quitting smoking, focus on that single goal.

Second make your goal realistic and specific. For example, “I choose to lose 10 pounds in the next 90 days” or “It is my goal to reduce the number of cigarettes I smoke in half by April 1st, 2014”.

Next take it slowly.  Make small changes a few at a time. For example, if you’re quitting smoking start by cutting out one afternoon cigarette.  Do that for a few days then cut another cigarette out of your daily routine and so on until you reach your goal.  If you’re trying to save money don’t try to cut back all of your expenses at once.  Rather than stopping for a large latte every day, buy a medium latte every other day.  Then every few weeks reassess your finances and make another adjustment.

Another great way to help attain your goal is to hold yourself accountable by either writing the goal down and putting it in a location where you can read it every day or by telling a friend or family member about your goal so that they can remind you of your goal and keep you focused.  You can also hire a life coach or therapist to help hold you accountable for achieving your goal.

As you go through the steps it’s important to remember to celebrate all of your little successes.  Every day go to a mirror look yourself in the eyes and say to yourself,  “Thank you for sticking to the plan.” or “Congratulations, you did a great job today!” or “I’m proud of you for losing 5 pounds”.  Allow yourself to acknowledge your success.

On your path to your goal remember to focus your thoughts on creating that new behavior and stay in the present moment rather than on dwelling on what you’ve done in the past or on what you plan to do in the future.

In order to make permanent change you must change old habits, eliminate limiting beliefs and alter neural pathways in the brain.  It takes at least 21 days to make these changes so patience is key.  This is where life coaching and hypnotherapy can be of assistance in identifying and removing barriers to success while helping to reinforce new thought patterns.

This is a great time to set a goal, create a realistic plan of action and set off down the path to success.
